Pregnancy ultrasound scans are essential for monitoring the health, well-being, and development of the fetus as well as detecting any complications related to pregnancy. An ultrasound is a non-invasive diagnostic imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of the developing fetus. The images provide valuable information about the baby’s growth and development, and the health of the mother during pregnancy.
The most common scan done during pregnancy is the transabdominal ultrasound, which is done by applying a gel to the mother’s abdomen and using a handheld device (called a “probe”) to create images of the fetus. Another type is the transvaginal ultrasound, which is done by inserting a probe into the mother’s vagina to get a closer look at the fetus. This gives higher-resolution images. A Doppler scan in pregnancy is used to measure blood flow in the fetus, umbilical cord, and umbilical artery. A 3d ultrasound produces real-life images of the unborn baby. Ultrasounds do not use any X-Ray radiation during the procedure, rather sound waves are used that are generally safe and converted to images on the screen.
Let’s see the benefits of ultrasound in more detail.
Early Dating Scan
An expectant mother’s first ultrasound during pregnancy is sometimes performed as an early dating scan to confirm the pregnancy. This will help the gynecologist to know whether there is a heartbeat present, whether there is a single baby or more, whether the pregnancy is inside the uterus or not, and whether there is any tumor-like growth or cysts in the ovaries. This is most relevant when the mother has irregular periods due to PCOD or some other cause.
NT Scan or Anomaly Scan
Every pregnant lady must undergo an ultrasound scan between 11 weeks and 13 weeks +6 days. The most ideal time is between 12 to 13 weeks. This is called the NT Scan. In this scan, we measure the thickness of the fluid behind the baby’s neck (called Nuchal Translucency or NT) and take certain measurements of the fetus. Along with this, by analysis of a few hormones in the mother’s blood, the computer in the scanning machine will calculate whether the fetus has got a low, moderate, or high risk to have a genetic abnormality. This test is always recommended to be done so that any genetic abnormality can be avoided by using ultrasound and blood tests. Equally important is the fact that at this stage few abnormalities of the organs of the baby can be identified with the help of a high-end ultrasound machine and experienced radiologists.
20 Weeks Scan
Another ultrasound performed is during the second trimester, around 20 weeks, to examine the whole of the baby’s anatomy along with the placenta and the fluid surrounding the baby. Additional ultrasounds may be necessary if there are any concerns about the baby’s health.
Growth Scan
Later in the pregnancy, Ultrasounds help gynecologist to ensure that the baby is growing and developing at the appropriate rate. It can also help identify potential problems, such as low birth weight or premature delivery, which can be addressed through appropriate care and guidance.
Pregnancy ultrasounds can help diagnose and monitor certain medical conditions. For example, if the mother has gestational diabetes, ultrasounds can be used to monitor the baby’s growth and ensure that they are not growing too large. Additionally, ultrasounds can be used to monitor the baby’s growth and well-being if the mother has high blood pressure or other medical conditions.
Emotional bonding with your child
Pregnancy ultrasounds can provide parents with a unique opportunity to see their baby before they are born. Ultrasounds can be incredibly emotional and meaningful for parents, providing them with a chance to bond with their unborn child. If the radiologist has a 3D or 4D ultrasound machine, the parents can actually see the movements of the baby, the way it kicks or moves its hands, or sucks its thumbs. It is a thrilling moment for the to-be mom and dad.
