What is Early Pregnancy Scan or
Dating scan?

An early pregnancy scan or Dating scan is done before 9 weeks to make sure of pregnancy and to determine the gestational age. If you are not sure of your last menstrual period, it is recommended to undergo this early scan. It will check the baby’s heartbeat to confirm live pregnancy, and the position of the pregnancy (to make sure it is inside the uterus). It also picks up any abnormal growth or cysts in the ovaries and uterus.

The Procedure

Time taken usually is 15 minutes and no particular preparation is required and abdominal and vaginal scans may be performed.
