2D, 3D & 4D Ultrasounds – The Different Types of Fetal Scans During Pregnancy

2D, 3D & 4D Ultrasounds – The Different Types of Fetal Scans During Pregnancy

2D Ultrasounds

This is the most common type of ultrasound scan and is typically referred to as a “Level 1” ultrasound. It is the less expensive and most commonly conducted ultrasound. It is a standard, two-dimensional ultrasound where only two ultrasound beams are used and the pictures are taken from different angles, producing a two-dimensional black and white image of your baby. A 2D ultrasound is the most basic type of pregnancy ultrasound. The 2D ultrasound does not allow you to see your baby in three dimensions but allows you to see the baby from multiple angles.

The standard 2D ultrasound generally takes between 20 and 30 minutes. For most people who are having their first baby, it is sufficient to diagnose whether there are any serious health concerns in the pregnancy. However, if you are having a high-risk pregnancy, you may need a 3D ultrasound to evaluate the baby more thoroughly.

3D Ultrasounds

A 3D ultrasound takes an image of the baby in a cross-sectional view, which provides a three-dimensional view of the baby. The soundwaves are sent into the womb and bounced back, creating a picture of the baby that is about five times clearer than the 2D image. A 3D ultrasound creates 3D images that can show the outer form of the baby, the skeletal structure of the baby, and the internal organs also. As the name implies, all 3D images are very detailed and have a three-dimensional effect. The use of 3D ultrasound is helpful for both the expectant parents and the doctor who can better assess the health of the fetus.

3D Ultrasound Benefits

3D ultrasounds are a newer form of imaging and are usually performed to find out more about any abnormalities the baby may have. 3D ultrasounds also work well for a woman who is carrying multiple babies, allowing them to clearly see each baby individually.

3D ultrasounds can be done at any time during pregnancy but are mostly performed after 18 weeks. It is useful in determining the baby’s facial features, including the cheeks, nose, mouth, and chin. As the child develops, other body parts can also be seen, as well as internal organs.

Unlike 2D ultrasounds, this scan is not that common and requires special probes. The 3D ultrasound is also a more time-consuming procedure. This technology is particularly useful for families who need to cope with difficult circumstances. This is because the 3D ultrasound can reveal if something is wrong with the baby’s development even before the birth as a photographic image, hence parents can understand better the fetal abnormality.

However, 3D ultrasound is not meant to replace a 2D ultrasound.

4D Ultrasounds

4D ultrasound is a high-quality ultrasound that creates a 4D moving image. A 4D ultrasound captures the activities of the developing baby inside the mother in the form of a video clip. It may be used to create a photograph or create a video that can be replayed. The 4D ultrasound can be done at any time of pregnancy but is usually asked in the second or third trimester of pregnancy. 4D ultrasounds are more expensive than 2D and 3D ultrasounds.

Even with the advancement of 3D and 4D ultrasound technology, 2D ultrasound is still the most commonly used ultrasound technique

There is no risk or harm to the baby when having an ultrasound as it uses harmless sound waves.
